Year 8! Mount Washington 2019

We all have a story. Some can be shared more easily than others.

Depression. Anxitety. PTSD. Bipolar. Scitzophrenia. Personality disorders. All these are invisible with stigma, shame and often times misunderstood.  Living with mental illness can be so challenging and misdiagnosed. Living with someone with mental illness has it's own sadness and helplessness.

I have a personal story like so many that I have met throughout life and hiked with us over the years.  Hiking and being outdoors is my passion - and recently many studies have proven the benefits of hiking for those with depression.

However this particular hike is very close to my heart.  Every step is for people I love and lost because of this disease, most especially my mom who took her life in 2008. I have met beautiful souls on this journey, whether it was Mt Washington, or other great mountains in New England, or Spain's 500 mile trek on El Camino.  Many ask and wonder why we do this.  Once they've discovered the reason most can relate on some level.  Mental illness is something we need to talk about and understand more clearly, and more importantly pass no judgement.

This annual hike up Mount Washington donates 100% of ALL funds raised. 80% goes to the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation and 20% to Trail Maintenance.  We have an incredibly dedicated crew behind the scenes of Hike for Mental Health, www.hikeformentalhealth.org.  I can't say enough about the team, they are heroes in my world.

We have had many first-timers, and many experienced hikers; teams with soldiers, moms, dads, young and old, children, barefoot hikers, disabled hikers, photographers, scientists, teachers, law enforcement, accountants....etc. We start as strangers and end with lifelong friendships.

August 24th Join us! .... if just to challenge yourself. Come hike on dirt paths that will lead you to view New Hampshire's spectacular and breath taking mountain peaks knowing you've not only fed your body and soul but made an impact on breaking the stigma of mental illness.

...and for those that need a bone...beer and burgers at the Woodstock Inn & Brewery - North Woodstock NH on me !

Thanks to so many...you all know who you are! xoxox

ABOUT My HIKE for Mental Health

1 in 4 families is affected by mental illness.

I am taking a HIKE for Mental Health so I can raise funds for a great cause, reduce the stigma of mental illness, and help preserve wilderness trails.

HIKE for Mental Health is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded on the vision of a world in which everyone, including those who suffer mental illness, can find the simple joy of living.

Our mission is to alleviate the suffering of those afflicted by mental illness, eliminate the associated stigma, and to foster responsible use of wilderness trails.

As an all-volunteer organization, we distribute 100% of contributions raised by our hikers.

  • 80 cents from every dollar funds scientific research to prevent, cure, and treat mental illness
  • 20 cents maintains and preserves wilderness trails

Your donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by the IRS. Thank you for your support.
