There is a stigma that surrounds mental illness. For all that we have accomplished in this world, for all the topics we can openly talk about, for all the mistakes we have made, for all we have done right...we still look at mental illness as an untouchable subject. We turn a blind eye. We dismiss people because of true problems they have. We think they should just tough it out, get over it.
And that's not right.
We need to treat mental illness like we do any other disease. It's a problem that people need help with. I am a nurse, I see it first hand. I also go through anxiety and depression like so many others do. So I'm going to do this hike because hiking helps me cope. But I'm also going to donate because the money helps others who need it and I hope you do as well.
