Please join me and my Clinical Mental Health Counseling program peers on April 28th beginning at 9:30am at Elk Knob Summit to hike for mental heatlh awarenss in the high country, or by contributing to my fundraising page to support the Hike For Mental Health mission (as described below) to help advocate for mental health in the high country of North Carolina! So many people think that mental health care looks like lying on a couch being told by a person with a notepad what's wrong with them, when in reality there are MANY ways to take care of your mental health- one of which is knowing when to take time to yourself by getting back into nature! By taking this journey up Elk Knob together, we can take a moment to nourish ourselves and hopefully encourage others to do the same.

Trip Details:

Elk Knob CMHC Hike For Mental Health 2018- April 28th, 2018 @ 9:30am

Meet us in the parking lot around 9:30 to begin our hike to the top! For those who can't participate in person, please consider donating to my page to help me raise money for H4MH that will go to preserving the hiking trails (20% of your donation) and funding research grants through the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (80% of your donation).

From the HIke for Mental Health Mission page (

"Hiking on backcountry trails helps many people re-connect with nature and with places within themselves that get obscured in the daily hustle and bustle. A few days in the solitude of the trail re-grounds them and helps preserve their mental health.

For people battling mental illness, however, the path to mental health is rarely so simple. Mental illness affects 1 out of 4 families in the United States, leaving those who suffer from it and their families searching for answers, cures and treatments that will allow them to experience the simple joy of living.

The mission of HIKE for Mental Health

  1. Increase public awareness of the challenges and suffering faced by those afflicted by mental illness and their families.
  2. Increase public appreciation for and responsible use of wilderness trails.
  3. Raise funds, principally by coordinating fundraising wilderness hikes, in order to
      1. prevent and alleviate the pain caused by mental illness
      2. maintain and preserve wilderness trails

In distributing its net proceeds, HIKE for Mental Health will direct

  • Eighty percent to scientific research to alleviate suffering from mental illness and to programs that eliminate the stigma surrounding it
  • Twenty percent to preserve wilderness trails"
