Hello my name is Chris or (Grizz) as I’m known on the trail. I'm attempting to thru hike the Appalacian Trail I started March 1st 2019. My goal is to raise $5,000 for Mental Health research. A little about me I'm an Iraq veteran that served 12 years in the Army National Guard and self proclaimed envrionmetal hippie. I have been hiking since I was 19 and find nothing I would rather do more than go hiking with my friends.

I have been battling with my own mental health issues from adjusting to life after war and also being diagnosed with major depression with psycosis . Dealing with my depression and psychosis has been really hard at times. My psychosis was something I had kept secret for many years from my friends, family and my fellow soldiers because of the stigma that comes with it. My mental health took me to a very dark place in January of 2012. I was asked by a nurse what my one reason to fight for was and I said to thru hike the AT or PCT. I fell in love with the pictures and videos I had seen of those trails and ever since then knew I had to thru hike one of them. I have found that working towards this goal has done alot for my own mental health. I lost three friends to suicide that struggled with their own personal mental health issues. My friends suicides as well as my own attempt have encouraged me to bring awareness to the mental health issue in this country. I also would like to show others like me that you can go out and accomplish your goals and overcome your mental illness. I hope you deicde to donate to a good cause and thank you in advance. You will also be able to follow my journey on YouTube just search “Grizz in the woods” See you out on the trail.

ABOUT Appalachian Trail

1 in 4 families is affected by mental illness.

I chose to make HIKE for Mental Health a part of my Appalachian Trail hike so I can raise funds for a great cause and reduce the stigma of mental illness.

HIKE for Mental Health is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded on the vision of a world in which everyone, including those who suffer mental illness, can find the simple joy of living.

Our mission is to alleviate the suffering of those afflicted by mental illness, eliminate the associated stigma, and to foster responsible use of wilderness trails.

As an all-volunteer organization, we distribute 100% of contributions raised by our hikers.

  • 80 cents from every dollar funds scientific research to prevent, cure, and treat mental illness
  • 20 cents maintains and preserves wilderness trails
