Shyanne Murfield AT Thru Hike 2019

Hey Y’all -

I am Shyanne Murfield and I will be attempting a solo thru hike of the Appalachian Trail, yes all 2,192 miles of it. I will be starting from Springer Mt in Georgia with the goal of making it to Mt. Katahdin in Maine. I want to dedicate this hike to mental health research, treatment, and prevention and hope you will support me on this journey anyway you can.

I have many reasons that I feel like I need to hike, but one of the biggest is my mental health. In February of 2018 I had what I call ‘the break down’. I was barely able to function, I was going to work then coming home to sleep and that is it. I wasn’t eating (lost 40 pounds), wasn’t showering (I am supersied I got away with that),or socializing. If you talked to me I would either snap at you in misdirected anger or break down in tears (and I hate tears). I was sucidial, but didn’t have the energy to do anything about it (and honestly my dog wouldn’t understand why I was gone). All of this happened slowly and built up till ‘the break down’ and I was dragged by my loving parents to the hospital. I found out that I have been living with clinical major depression, general anxiety disorder, and PTSD. Sine then I have found a great team of doctors that have helped me find the right medication and a therapist that forces me to face the problems pills can’t fix. Additionally, I have found support in my parents, family, and friends, who have been more than patient with me. We all have been preping and planing for this hike for the past 3 months and they are on call if I need them, but in the woods I will be on my own.

It has been a long road to get here, but I am glad the anticipation is almost over. As I mentioned earlier, I am deadicating this hike to mental health research and treatment and will accept support in any way that you can. However, if you can support my hike monetarily, please consider putting your money towards this fundraiser. My goal is to rise one dollar for every mile of the trail (which is 2,192 miles this year) so every little bit helps. 80 cents of your dollar will be donated to mental health research grants and programs that provide treatment while the other 20 cents will be donated to help maintain our nation’s trail system.

Lastly, if you have talked to me about this hike in the past few months you will know I am scared of the cold and not making it all the way to Maine. If I don’t finish all 2,192 miles of the AT by Feb. 2, 2020 I will be donating a dollar for every mile not hiked to Hike of Mental Health.

Thanks For Your Support.
